Purpose

One of the major issues faced by law enforcement authorities during riots is control of unruly crowd. The effectiveness of crowd control mechanism is vital to ensure the life safety of both crowd and the police. Oftentimes, barricades are deployed as a passive measure of crowd control and functions by demarcating a line of control. Any forceful attempt of the crowd to cross this line of control is typically met with active crowd control strategies such as use of batons, water cannon and rubber pellets. The necessity to use these active measures indicates failure of the passive system (barricades) and implies direct physical contact between crowd and the police and inadvertently results in injuries to both sides.

Objectives

Traffic Control: Barricades are used to manage traffic flow by closing off roads, redirecting vehicles, or creating detours during emergencies, accidents, construction work, or special events. They help in ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

Safety: Barricades are used to mark hazardous areas, such as construction sites, road closures, or areas with potential dangers. They serve as a visual warning to prevent accidents and keep people away from harm.
Emergency Situations: Barricades are deployed during emergencies such as natural disasters, fires, terrorist attacks, or other crises to establish perimeters, secure areas, and guide evacuations. They help emergency responders in managing the situation effectively.
